Tutoring with STAIR

I’m really happy I decided to volunteer for the STAIR program. I got to meet and befriend a very sweet, fun, and smart 2nd grader who I am going to miss meeting with once a week. Thank you for this opportunity!

STAIR tutors play a critical role in their students’ reading journey. STAIR tutors develop a one-on-one relationship with students, which is what makes this volunteer experience so rewarding. The best STAIR tutors are enthusiastic, organized, and engaging. We want STAIR students to be excited about reading!

STAIR students are second and third-graders who attend New Orleans area public schools. STAIR’s Tutoring Program is semester-based (Fall and Spring, no Summer). Virtual Tutors are asked to dedicate 1.5 hours per week to the STAIR program (60 minute tutoring session, lesson review, and online reporting/parent communication). In-Person Tutors are asked to dedicate 1.5-2 hours per week to the STAIR program (60 minute tutoring session, lesson review, and online reporting/parent communication).

In 2026, STAIR will offer both In-Person and Virtual Tutoring on Mondays through Thursdays between 4:00 and 6:30 p.m. The 10-week Fall 2026 Program will start during mid-September. There will be a one-week break for Thanksgiving.

If you are interested in tutoring with STAIR, please fill out an application. Applicants will be required to pass a background check, participate in Tutor Training, and pass a Tutor Training Quiz.

STAIR will provide all materials and books. Virtual tutors will need to have access to the internet and a desktop computer, laptop,iPad, ortablet with a camera for the virtual sessions.

For more information, please contact STAIR at program@stairnola.org or 504.899.0820.
