STAIR in Maryland

This STAIR program is a joint project between First Presbyterian Church, Annapolis Elementary School and the Stanton Center.  Students are selected by their school, and the program is coordinated by the church.  The program is located at the Stanton Center, which serves a primarily African-American population.  We have had a high of 8 students this year, and expect this will be maximum we will accept at this location.  The program runs on Tuesday and Thursday, 4 - 5 pm, October through May.  We celebrated Dr. Seuss' birthday by having a shared reading of Green Eggs and Ham, and special related treats.

Our volunteers have been very committed and faithful, and have become very attached to their children, which I am sure is an "occupational" hazard.  After working with the children for a few months, we were amazed to find out how very intelligent some of them are, although they are tagged as poor or slow readers.  We hope that other programs also address the needs of these children as they go through school to help ensure that they remain in school and are successful.
