STAIR in Florida - Pilgrim

This STAIR program is run by Pilgrim Church in Port Charlotte and partners with its closest public elementary school, Deep Creek Elementary School.  Two sessions are conducted each year---one in October/November and one in February/March. Each session meets two times a week for six weeks for two hours each time. The church has just completed its eleventh STAIR program.
 
The school selects ten to twelve second graders who need additional assistance in reading. They are responsible for getting parent permission, completing a needs sheet for the students we will be receiving, and arranging transportation to the church from the Charlotte County School System. At the church we provide the one-on-one tutors, security, all of the materials including snacks, instruction, and transportation as needed for each student at the end of each session.
 
Our church provides an adequate budget to meet our needs and members also have made special gifts of money and beautiful books to STAIR. We, and the school agrees, believe that we are making a significant difference with our students in building confidence, a love of reading and of course decoding skills, comprehension improvement, and also work in writing. Therefore, we plan to continue what we are doing making adjustments and improvements as needed.
